Credit card machine care
How should a credit card machine be cleaned?
Clean a credit card machine only with the method approved for its exact model. A safe general approach is to stop transactions, power down and disconnect the device when its instructions permit, then gently wipe exterior surfaces with a soft, non-abrasive cloth that is only lightly dampened with an approved solution. Put cleaner on the cloth, never directly on the machine, and keep moisture away from card slots, ports, electrical contacts, seams, and the printer.
Manufacturer instructions differ by device materials and construction, so the model guide or support provider should take priority over general advice. Cleaning is routine care, not a repair procedure or a substitute for troubleshooting damaged hardware.
A practical cleaning sequence
Prepare the device
Finish any active transaction and receipt printing. Follow the model instructions for shutting down, unplugging power, and disconnecting cables. If a terminal is built into a countertop, kiosk, or point-of-sale system, use the operator guide before removing any connection.
Wipe exterior surfaces
Use a clean, soft, lint-free or non-abrasive cloth. Apply only a small amount of the manufacturer-approved cleaning solution to the cloth. The cloth should be damp rather than wet, and liquid should not run across the screen or housing.
Dry and inspect
Allow exterior surfaces to dry as directed before reconnecting cables or restoring power. Check that no moisture is visible near openings. Confirm the screen, keypad, card readers, printer cover, and cables appear intact before returning the device to service.
What should stay away from the terminal?
Do not spray water, glass cleaner, sanitizer, disinfectant, or another liquid directly onto a payment terminal. Do not immerse the device or let moisture enter the chip-card slot, magnetic-stripe reader, ports, printer, ventilation openings, seams, or electrical contacts. Manufacturer guidance also commonly warns against abrasive products and industrial-strength cleaners because they can scratch a display or damage plastic and contacts.
- Avoid improvised tools: do not push cotton swabs, paper, metal objects, or household items into a card reader.
- Avoid excess pressure: scrub-free wiping helps protect touchscreens, printed keys, seals, and display coatings.
- Avoid assumptions about alcohol or disinfectants: acceptable ingredients and concentrations can vary by model and surface. Use them only when the current model documentation expressly allows them.
- Avoid cleaning live equipment: follow the manufacturer procedure for power and cable disconnection before applying moisture.
If the merchant cannot identify the terminal model or approved product, pause and ask the equipment or support provider rather than testing a cleaner on the device.
Screen, keypad, and card-reader guidance
Screen and housing
Wipe gently in small passes and keep the cloth from becoming saturated. Some guides allow lightly soapy water or a mild glass-cleaning product applied to a cloth, while other models specify different products. That variation is why the exact user guide matters. A product permitted for one screen should not automatically be used on another terminal.
Keypad and high-touch areas
Use the same controlled-moisture approach approved for the model. Do not force liquid around key edges or under a privacy shield. If residue remains, repeat a gentle pass instead of soaking or scraping the surface.
Chip and magnetic-stripe readers
Keep ordinary cloth, fluid, and loose fibers out of reader slots. When reader cleaning is necessary, use only a manufacturer- or provider-approved reader-cleaning card and follow its instructions. If cards still fail after approved cleaning, document the symptom and contact support; forcing objects into a reader can make the damage worse.
Build cleaning into store operations
Set a schedule based on transaction volume, shared use, dust, food service exposure, and the terminal manufacturer's instructions. A short written routine helps employees use the same approved cloth and product each time. Keep cleaning supplies labeled and separate from stronger chemicals used elsewhere at the business.
Record recurring issues such as a sticky key, dim display, cracked housing, loose cable, repeated read failure, or moisture exposure. Stop using equipment that appears unsafe or physically damaged and escalate it through the appropriate support channel. A clean surface does not correct a failing component.

Common cleaning questions
Can cleaner be sprayed directly on a credit card machine?
No. Apply an approved product to a soft cloth, not directly to the terminal. Direct spraying can send liquid into openings, readers, contacts, or internal components.
Can the chip-card slot be wiped with a cloth?
Do not put an ordinary cloth or improvised object into the slot. Use an approved reader-cleaning card only when the model or support provider instructs you to do so.
What if the terminal stops working after cleaning?
Disconnect it if that can be done safely, do not add heat or more cleaning product, and contact the equipment or support provider. Note what product was used and where moisture may have entered. The guide on what to do when a credit card machine freezes can help organize basic observations without opening or repairing the device.
Choose the right next step
Find the manufacturer and model number, open the current user or maintenance guide, and use only the cleaning method it approves. For a damaged device, repeated reader failure, or uncertain instructions, contact the equipment or support provider before cleaning again.
Privacy reminder: when requesting help, share the terminal model and a description of the issue. Do not send cardholder data, full card numbers, passwords, bank credentials, merchant credentials, or secret API keys through a general contact form.
