Permanent move to another business site
Create or confirm the destination location first. Review the business name, address, contact details, receipt identity, user access, device assignment, and reporting setup before moving the terminal.
Credit card machine FAQ
Often, yes—but moving the hardware is only part of the job. A payment device may be assigned to a business location inside the provider's system, and that assignment can affect its configuration, receipts, reporting, network access, and who is authorized to use it.
Before accepting a payment at the new site, ask the provider responsible for the device which account, location profile, and setup steps apply. The answer depends on the payment service and device deployment, so a terminal that powers on or connects to Wi-Fi is not necessarily ready for use at a different site.
A business can frequently relocate a terminal when the destination is an established location under the same business and payment setup. The provider may require the destination to be created or selected in its dashboard, the device to be reassigned or registered, and location-specific settings to be reviewed.
Current Stripe Terminal documentation shows why location setup matters: Stripe requires readers to be registered to a Location and says the assigned location helps deliver the correct regional configuration. Square similarly supports multiple business locations and uses device codes to associate devices and Square hardware with a specific location for device-level reporting. These are examples of provider-specific workflows, not universal instructions.

Create or confirm the destination location first. Review the business name, address, contact details, receipt identity, user access, device assignment, and reporting setup before moving the terminal.
Ask whether the existing location profile can be used temporarily or whether a separate event location is required. Confirm the supported network method and the process for returning the device to its normal assignment.
A move from one counter or room to another may require only power, network, and peripheral checks. Still verify that cables, printers, registers, and user permissions are correct before reopening checkout.
Stop and contact the responsible provider. Do not assume a device registered for one business can process for another. Account ownership and device registration need an authorized review.
If the destination has unreliable connectivity, review whether a credit card machine can work without internet, then follow the exact offline-payment instructions for the selected service.

Avoid discovering at checkout that the device still belongs to the old location profile or needs a fresh registration step. Confirm the workflow while the terminal is still available at its current site.
A reset can remove settings or interrupt pending activity. Do not reset, erase, or re-register a working device unless the provider's authorized instructions call for it.
Verify the business identity shown to customers and the location used for internal reporting. A successful test transaction alone does not confirm that every location field is correct.
Use verified provider channels. Never place cardholder data, passwords, bank credentials, complete account numbers, security codes, or secret API keys in a general contact form or ordinary email.
Keep the answers with the terminal's asset record. The credit card machines and hardware FAQ hub includes more planning guidance.
Start with the terminal model, serial number, current assignment, destination, network, and connected equipment. Have the responsible provider confirm the required location and registration steps, then verify receipts and reporting before normal payment activity begins.

Share only business contact details and a high-level description of the move. Do not submit cardholder data, passwords, bank credentials, complete account numbers, security codes, or secret API keys through a general form.
