What is contactless payment?

Contactless payment is an in-person checkout method that lets a customer present an enabled card, phone, or wearable close to a compatible acceptance device instead of inserting a chip card or swiping a magnetic stripe. The payment device and reader exchange transaction information over a very short-range wireless connection. The purchase then follows the merchant's normal payment flow for authorization and a result.

For merchants, contactless describes how payment credentials are presented at the point of sale. It is not a separate bank account, card type, or promise that every card, wallet, terminal, and processing setup will work together.

How a contactless transaction works

1. Checkout is ready

The point-of-sale system sends the amount to an enabled acceptance device. The customer should wait for the terminal prompt rather than tapping before the checkout is ready.

2. The customer presents a device

The customer holds a contactless card, phone, or wearable near the Contactless Symbol on the reader. Physical contact is not required; the device only needs to be within the reader's short operating range.

3. Payment data is exchanged

The chip or mobile device communicates with the reader. EMVCo explains that EMV contactless transactions generate a one-time security code for each transaction. The terminal then submits the transaction through the configured payment path.

4. The terminal shows a result

The merchant and customer follow the terminal response and any additional prompts. Verification steps and fallback behavior can differ by card, device, issuer, payment network, terminal configuration, and provider.

What customers can tap

Cards, phones, and wearables

A contactless chip card has an embedded chip and antenna that can communicate with a contactless reader. A payment-enabled phone or wearable can also present payment credentials through a wallet application. Both may use near-field communication, commonly called NFC, but the customer experience and device controls are not identical.

A phone or wearable may require the user to unlock the device or confirm the purchase. A card follows the prompts produced by the terminal and card program. Merchants should let the terminal guide the interaction rather than give customers a universal instruction about signatures, PINs, or other verification.

Look for the two marks

The Contactless Indicator on a card or device shows that it can be used for an EMV contactless payment. The Contactless Symbol on a terminal identifies the place to present the card or device and signals contactless acceptance. A visible symbol is useful, but merchants should still confirm that the feature is enabled for their actual checkout setup.

Contactless card versus digital wallet

A contactless card presents credentials from its embedded chip. A digital wallet is software that helps a user store or access eligible payment methods on a supported device. Both can create a tap experience at an NFC-enabled checkout, but they are different form factors.

Contactless payment versus QR payment

What to verify before offering tap-to-pay

  • Acceptance device: Confirm the exact terminal or point-of-sale device has an enabled contactless reader and current provider-supported software.
  • Processing setup: Ask the payment provider whether contactless acceptance is active for the merchant account, device profile, and intended payment types.
  • Checkout behavior: Test ordinary purchases, cancellations, receipts, and staff handoffs using the provider's approved test process. Do not assume one device's workflow represents every terminal.
  • Customer prompts: Train staff to follow the terminal result and avoid bypassing verification or fallback prompts.
  • Physical placement: Keep the reader visible and reachable, and show customers where the Contactless Symbol is located.
  • Operations: Document who handles device updates, connectivity issues, cleaning, inspection, and escalation when tapping does not work.

A practical contactless checkout routine

Start with the sale amount visible on the checkout screen. When the terminal is ready, invite the customer to hold one payment device near the Contactless Symbol and keep it there until the reader responds. Follow the displayed result. If the tap is not accepted, use only the fallback option shown by the terminal or the procedure documented by the payment provider.

Do not ask a customer to send card details, account numbers, wallet credentials, passwords, or authentication codes through email, text, chat, or a general contact form. Staff should never copy complete card data into notes to work around a failed tap. Escalate recurring device or processing issues through the approved support channel.
